The Matriarch has begun in earnest

Greetings! I managed to get some good sewing time in this weekend and I hope you did too! My start has been slow because I’m pressing the yardage as different colors are indicated on the units I’m piecing but soon I will have pressed them all so there will be more time sewing and the only time spent pressing will be as each seam is sewn. I have to say, this project is an undertaking unlike any I’ve prepared for before. It feels good to have some momentum going!

Another old photo from when we had just finished painting. Those cabinets are full of yarn and felt now 😀

I know what I have so far doesn’t look like I spent much time sewing but you have to consider that each piece needs to be measured, tested, and cut before sewing. I want to be cautious with my cuts because I don’t know how much allowance for mistakes has been made with the fabric supplied in the kit. With 31 different colors you do have to pay close attention. If you’ve done FPP before and are comfortable with it, this is no different except for some of the really large sections. I found them a bit unwieldy to physically handle but I think I have the units with the biggest pieces behind me now. Maybe. I find working with smaller pieces of fabric to be a lot easier but everyone is different.

I think the tusk looks cool! I’m trying to sew all of the units with big gray sections first to ensure I have enough yardage for them. As you can see, some of those sections are pretty big.

A reminder of what I’m making.

And while this next bit isn’t sewing, it is related to the quilted cards I make. I got to thinking how fun it would be to add a fun, sparkly seal to secure the envelopes of my cards. I looked into ordering them and thought they were rather spendy AND of course I wanted a bunch of different shapes. I can’t cut these on our laser because the sequins in this product are PVC and the gas that would be created would not only be highly toxic to breathe but would also damage the laser, so I’m cutting them on my Silhouette Cameo, which is tricky and slow but well worth the effort. Take a look!

Isn’t that pretty!!!
Shapes!
These seahorses were a tricky cut-sorry about the shadow!

It probably sounds nuts, but details like this really float my boat! I’m crazy for stuff like this! Hmmm, how many colors will I order? No telling!

I have a busy housekeeping week ahead, cooking, baking, prepping, cleaning, and a few errands, so I’m not sure when I’ll get the chance to sew again but you can bet I’ll try to squeeze it in when I can. Even one or two units a day will add up over the course of the week. Not that I’m in a rush to finish; I have no goal for a finish date; I think you have to be in the moment with projects like this, just focused on the present.

Have a great week!

Dana
