Progress on The Matriarch

Greetings from soggy, sloshy northern Virginia! I’m not complaining; I actually love this weather! Being cozy at home, cooking and baking, and of course sewing-what’s not to like!?!

Because I cooked and baked this weekend I didn’t spend the entirety of it in my sewing room but I did make some progress completing more units. I believe I have 33 left to go, some large. Some small, but certainly a lot of piecing ahead.

17 units complete

I spent a lot of time ironing all of the yardage. I didn’t do it all at once; I pressed as the pattern pieces called for the various colors, but it was still time consuming. People who know me also know that I’m a bit of a neat-nick and this project is stretching my tolerance for chaos to the limit! Check out the weekend aftermath.

A colorful mess!

I know it’s doesn’t look like I accomplished much but each section has to be measured, cut, re-pressed with a spritz of water, sewn, pressed again and blocked to set the seam, and potentially trimmed before proceeding to the next color/section within the unit. I’m up and down a lot, putting fabrics back in order and retrieving the ones I need for each unit. I’m also up and down for each cut as my room is not optimized for this project so those things nibble away at my assembly time. Not to worry as I am focused on being in the moment. The one thing about FPP, at least for me, is that it demands 100% of your attention 100% of the time. If my thoughts wander so does my needle, thus, I’m taking it one section at a time. I thought this would be a good winter project as there is much to do after the units are assembled.

Here is my bread…makes for a delicious snack!

Rosemary, basil, parsley, jalapeno and Fresno peppers, garlic, sundried tomatoes, Parmesan, and honey!
